As much as abstract things are important for you to improve your life, things like dedication, determination, perseverance, there are other aspects too, that are equally important, if not more important. And I say that, only because those aspects are completely non quantifiable. You can't measure how much determination you have, you can't measure how dedicated you are to your craft. Therefore, they really don't help you assess your progress. You need something a little more quantifiable if you need to know you've improved. My three favourite quantifiable aspects, amongst many others, are effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability. How much work are you able to accomplish in a given duration of time? That's your efficiency. You can measure your work and try to improve your efficiency, and it has to happen without compromises in quality, as in getting work done faster with higher accuracy in the work, otherwise there's no point. Your effectiveness is basically the effect of the work you've done, for instance, if you've been trying to learn a process for a given duration of time, you can test the effectiveness of your learning by giving yourself a quick test. Keep doing it and see if you can improve your ability to retain information. And my third favourite aspect is sustainability. Whatever you're doing today, must also be sustainable for tomorrow, especially if it is for the sake of your career and your future. Sometimes, when we're overenthusiastic, we spend too much of our energy on an activity and that will sooner or later, drain us and our interest in that activity. Keep in mind overworking is not equivalent to effective and efficient working. The work you do today should not become a barrier to you tomorrow. Try to time your activities and record the time it takes for you to get tired of the activity. How long does it take before you lose your complete focus. Even if your focus drops to 90%, drop the activity as that will snowball into 0% before you know. This will kill your interest in the activity and you don't want that to happen, do you?
