Gems.

People are always going to have only a short period of existence in your life. That is a universal truth. How short? You don't usually know. Maybe a  moment, a day, a few months or even a few years. And that's the usual case. But then, there are people who come into your life anouncing that they're only going to be there for a limited while. And when they turn out to be amazing people, you will be left yearning for more of their time with you  but in vain.

Hello there, I'm the Earthian.

Just one more second with them would be worth a million treasure chests because the second spent with them is worth everything and then some. But it gets really hurtful when you realize you have better odds of finding a million chests than getting one more second with them because that's how life works.
What you'd be left with is a lot of memories, so many of them, each of them screaming all of the emotions that one can feel. Good emotions, emotions that you'd want to feel. And that's it. Knowing that you don't get to make more of those memories is heartbreaking but the same heart sinks in an ocean of gratitude for the time that you at least got to spend with them. It's painful, but it's pain you don't mind feeling. In fact, the more you feel, the better.

I guess they really are gems.
